Maybe a keyhole cover for a old lock.

Don't know what it is, but it is British. VR under the crown stands for Victoria Regina.

I too believe it is a key hole cover for a lock. The top appears to have been broken off that would mate it to the lock.

just a thought, could the "front" actually be the back as the stamp seems a bit crude?

I DO BELIEVE IT IS A LOCK COVER THAT LOOKS JUST LIKE THE PIECE THAT I HAVE BUT THE TOP IS BROKE OFF.

humm if its a part of a heavy duty british padlock (busted off the lock??) then where is the chest and goodies that the paslock protected? I would have to think that camp sites that were good sites during the american civil war would have been just as good during the war of 1812 or rev war. when we fought the british --- :wink:
