Was it Japanned (black paint) or is that the tarnish? Square frame Japanned buckles are common for almost the whole 19th c.

Lucas, no it is not Japanned. The dark color in the pics is tarnish. Thanks, Breezie

Kuger, I feel the same way. The bottle's side seams stop before they reach the lip, and the lip is applied and irregular so I'm thinking about 1860's. The buckle was almost in touching distance of the bottle, so it makes sense to me they're from the same era. Breezie

I am still learning my buckles so I don't have much to add except that -

I like it!

Without the ruler there I would have thought it was larger.

It is in really nice condition and I would think mid-1800s fits.

Nice find :icon_thumleft:
and that picture is awesome!

Thanks Bramble. I didn't think this buckle would be that hard to ID, but I can't seem to find one exactly like it. I was hoping maybe some of the buckle experts would know. Breezie

Kuger, I was hoping someone might know what type of buckle it is, but I think you're right as it being a general utilitarian buckle with various uses. I'm going to green check this one, and move on. Thanks to all who helped. ;D Breezie

If it was a little bigger and had clipped corners I would say it looked like the gun fighters belt buckles!

The gold plating on it to me screams early 20th c.

BB, it doesn't have any gold plating on it; that's an optical illusion from the camera flash. The true color of the buckle can be seen in the last pic where there was not a flat surface for the camera light to bounce. Thanks, Breezie

These are 1870's boy's shoes, lace and buckle. These buckles run (pun) 1.5" range.

Lucas, thanks for the pic of the shoes; do you think you could find one that shows the flat part of the buckle?

Kuger, I think it is brass too!
