Hi;

I was detecting on a high spot of a farm field when I spotted some oyster shell and a few pieces of white pottery and black glass. Dug up this oil lamp piece. On the knob is "Made in USA" in an inner circle, and *Venus* E.M. & Co on an outer circle. Nothing on the back side. Doing some cursory web search I'm fairly confident that this is an Edward Miller lamp. The difficulty is dating it. He started in 1844 and in 1866 reformed to become Edward Miller & Co. I suspect that the "Made in USA" might be an indicator of a later logo. Have not been able to pinpoint when the "Venus" model of lamp may have been produced.

Any help?

This one that sold on ebay says it's from the 19th century. The knob that says Venus looks different then yours. My guess is what you found is from the late 19th century. No telling how many years this Venus model was produced. I wonder if Venus was the name of the actual lamp & wick assembly and was used in many lamp designs and styles?

Maybe someone knows, but I was wondering when the requirement to put "made in usa" came into existence. I have tried several searches but can't seem to come up with an answer.

Just rec'd an email from a gent who is an authority on EM Lamps. He advises the burner assy I found dates anywhere from 1875-early 1900s. This tells me the site I looked at would be 1875 at the earliest, possibly later.
