Went out today to a CW site where my buddy found a couple Spanish Reales and some other items dating to War of 1812 in the past.
Found my oldest coin to date here today and it had about an 1/8" of crust on each side.
Managed to lightly scrape some of the crust away with flat side of toothpick to reveal the coins details.
Turns out it is a 1810 Gibraltar Quarto Copper.
Can anyone give me some suggestions on how to proceed further with cleaning
Was really hopeing for a Reale, but ill settle for this Quarto, which I discovered is a fraction of a reale.
Please Advise.

I'm not sure if that can be helped much. The patina looks very fragile, so even with the peroxide method you'd probably lose much more than you gain.

Really cool coin find though, and great that it is identifiable. Not sure I've seen one of those posted here before.

Cheers,

Buck

Thanks Buck. Was a cool and interesting find. Went with the peroxide bath.
The first couple minutes it looked better, so I went all in and figured a longer soak would help.
Second soak was about ten minutes and was probably way too much. Lost detail.........
Probably shoulda stopped after the first 2 minute soak, but it was toasted.
Here is the link in todays finds with finished product at the bottom.
