waterproof discriminator: Minelab Excaliber. But be prepared for the wacky sounds, that take some getting used to. If they don't mind lacking discrimination (the ability to discriminate out nails and such), there are a variety of pulse machines to choose from.

Also depends on how bad the minerals are on the beaches they intend to hit. If it's really nasty, the pulse is sometimes your only choice. You can tell by the grey/black color of the sand, vs whiter sand which is less mineralized, to know the mineral content. Personally, I just use my Excaliber on all salt beaches. True, they won't cut the gunpowder grey mineralized beaches that well (they loose depth), and true, they won't find tinsel think gold chains or earing stubs, but they do cut our iron. If you are on a beach with industrial history (piers, etc...) nails can be a real problem. So it's a trade-off.

I'm not sure what you mean by "reasonably priced" but if you plan to hunt salt water beaches, the chances of having to deal with black sand and a heavy mineral load are pretty good. In some people's world, reasonably priced just flew out the window.

Good reliable water detectors are not cheap. they must be sealed if you are going into the water, not just a sealed coil. Rogue waves will get you. Having said all this I got a good used one and am satisfied with my first two outings. Resist the temptation to buy a cheap one.

Yeah, I never did get an answer as to what he was willing to pay. I'll see if I can get an answer from him. Thanks for the tips and more would be appreciated. Have a good one you all.

Welcome the Tnet.
First of all if they want to hunt the "beach" in the dry sand then they can get a very good low cost detector. The Ace250 would do well as would the Tesoro Silver uMax.
However,if they want to hunt salt wet sand or water then a waterproof detector would be advisable. The Tesoro Tiger Shark or Sand Shark would be low cost alternatives.
If you need more help in the decision please let me know.

well... figure a good water detector is going to run between 600 and 1000 new. You might be able to find a used one for between 300 and 700... but you can never be sure on used electronics (there's probably a reason they're selling it).

narrow down his price range, and we'll be able to get you some better info. He also might want to see if a local hobby shop has a "demo" model. They're used, and usually a bit cheaper than the brandy new models. (that's how I bought my first detector)
