Two questions....

1. How thick is it? Flat buttons are thinner than coins as a general rule.
2. How did it register on your machine? Buttons on my machine will ring up in the 40's on the VDI meter (usually). Large copper coins will ring anywhere from 74-85 depending on what type of large copper they are. I'm not familiar with the IDX but I'm sure the VDI's are similar to the DFX.

In the last picture it looks like there may have been a shank attached. That makes me lean a little more towards button.

Looks just like what I found where I found the Revolutionary war cartridge pouch badge.
Cleaned up nice though. After some touch-up, I could ID it.

Nice one BP. I'm glad you were able to ID it. ;D Looks pretty good.

I found lots of flat, smooth buttons in the UK missing the shank. 99% of the time you can see where the shank was. It's hard to tell by the pictures but you should be able to see the "scar" if it is there. All the buttons we found were round, exactly round. This one looks like it might not be "true." That to me would indicate a coin or some other type of planchet.

Delaware37 and I are definatley gonna hit that site hard again. Pictured are my finds with the bent up button and the musket balls. My button is almost the same diameter. Unfortunately it's pretty bent up. One of the musket balls is definitely old as indicated by the white patina.

You can tell a lot about the age of a musket ball by the caliber (.000"). The white patina forms fairly quick in some soils and not in others. I have found bullets less than 100 years old with white patina and 17th century pistols balls with no patina.

If you can see a scar where the loop attached then its a cica 1790's plain dandy button.
