I would make sure the battery contacts are really clean. Beyond that, there's no telling what the problem is.

yes they are clean, it has hardly been used and there is no corrosion

Wow, that's an oldy. You may have to open it up. First check the wire connections to the battery clips and to the circuit board~ it sounds like you don't have both batteries feeding the machine. Give the wires a gentle pull~ if one pulls free you've found the problem. Pull tests good and nothing appears broken open the box and get an ohm meter then make sure that the continuity checks good for the battery leads to the circuit board~ resistance should be about 0. Anything greater than 1 ohm and you may have a bad solder connection. After that come back and let us know. My thoughts.

I have a 15 year old MICRONTA DISCOVERY2 metal detector I bought new and haven't used for 10 years or so. I tried to use it this weekend and the low battery light stays on and the detector doesn't work. the batteries are brand new and I tried other new batteries also. is there a part that typically goes bad after that many years? Thanks
maybe the other new batteries were'nt that good either.were they fresh.test them with a battery tester to be sure they're good.

I opened it up and did find one bad connection. Thanks its back working now. I may need to upgrade to a newer detector and keep this one for a spare.

Good deal Krill. Yep I'd keep that one as a back up.... maybe hang it on a wall ;) Those oldies still work though. Keep swing'n

Resistors go up in value and caps dry out.............good luck!
