In these photos there are two buttons. One's crap but I'm curious what kind of button it was. The other, with the six raised bumps, I've seen before but can't remember anything about them. Bumpy button is 9/16" diameter and the trashed button is approx. 3/4" in diameter. What can you tell me about them? Thanks.

Flipped.

Could the one with the raised bumps be a wheel from a toy car?

The top one is pewter, as I'm sure you probably know. I think it is just an unmarked pewter flat button.

Thanks, BB.

That makes sense on pewter, since I've heard they deteriorate a lot but, no, I didn't even know that. (I'm just learning all this stuff as I go.)

I wouldn't think so on the other one but I'm mainly guessing that by the age of the other things I'm finding as well as I thought I've seen colonial(?) buttons posted with a similar pattern.

Pewter buttons are Always good finds--regardless of their state of deterioration. Once you dig your first "USA" pewter, I'm sure you'll agree. :o

The basis for my assessment of the second one is that the hole goes all the way through it--so it isn't a place where a shank was. It also appears to be made of lead perhaps? I'm still thinking "toy car," but I could be wrong. There are many, many layers of finds--some during occupation, and some occasional drops by farmers, children, and others at sites. Perhaps someone will come up with a more convincing ID for the item than I can, but that's my "gut instinct" right now on what the second piece is.

Oh, yeah, I'd be quite happy to find a "USA" button!

I just cleaned up the other a bit more. It's gilded/plated with something that looks like "brassy" gold. There might be some tiny lettering under there (thought I saw a "D") that might show up more. Have it soaking in water now. There are no signs of lead that I can tell. (No white patina at all, etc.) But it is not copper or brass as I originally surmised. The underlying metal is a grey metal with the gilt/plating on top.
