Metal Detecting
This button was found on 5/7/05 while detecting with Free2Detect. (See Best Finds.."Find of 5/7/05").
The button is about the diameter of a nickel. It has script letters. C,T,V. The back has the manufacturers name. "American Ry Supply Co.-24 Park Place NY".
The Ry tends to make me think that it is a railroad button rather than military, but I'm not sure. Any guesses are welcome.

Update:
A detecting friend did some research and found some additional information.
There was a group known as the U.S. Army Veterans Reserve Corps. circa 1863-1866.
No idea as to value though.
Thanks for the replies.

Where is the T? I see CVR or VCR. The R possibly being Railroad or Railway.

Contrary to the original poster's statement, the letters are not script letters. I mention the "font" because the "font" of a button's lettering can be important for correctly identifying it. (That is also true about the "font" of a backmark's lettering.)

Not many railroads have a name with a V-word in it. Given that the button's backmark dates from about 1890 into the 1920s, I suspect this button was for the Virginia Central Railroad/Railway. According to Wikipedia, that railroad company was in business during the era of the button's backmark. Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_Central_Railroad and read the part about "Other usues of the Virginia Central name."

Being a history-buff, and having lived in Fredericksburg VA for a while, I was aware that a Virginia Central Railroad/Railway had existed (twice) in Virginia's history.
