US Navy Button...

The Waterbury Button Company MAY have made that one, as they used the term "Superior Quality" from 1875-1935 as a quality mark.

Can we see a pic of the back to possibly help narrow the dates?

Here's the back, not a very good shot, but my camera battery is dead, I'll try to get a better one later.

Yea... a clearer pic might help :) The folks with button books mightbe able to narrow the quality mark down, I know Don in SJ has been very helpfull, or if you're lucky, the button man PBK will jump in.

I'm sticking with my original post... hard to tell more detail and what I've given you is a safe bet... sometimes minor details can help - but I don't see any.

Re: need button info please better pic of back added!

I tried it in the scanner, and got a bit more out of it. Not sure if this will help though. The side thats pushed just won't scan clearly.

Well now, clarity of the backmark is not exact enough to say for sure, but--- I am leaning more towards an CW button era 1860 and the manufacturer would be Steele & Johnson of Waterbury, Ct. It looks like a Albert's variety NA-113.

Steele and Johnson used the SUPERIOR QUALITY backmark for quite a few years, it varied in how they did it and I believe I see one star, in-between the two words, if there is another star on the other side between the words than I go with the 1860 date.

I thought for sure it was going to be a 1900 era button, but I don't think so.

there are definitely 2 stars, one on either side between the words. Now I wonder what a CW navy button is doing in Olympia WA. I guess it makes sense though, seeing as how this was a major lumber port in those days. And the park was once part of the Bigelow family homesite, and they are one of the oldest families in the northwest.

Here is a description from the Tice's book, see if it matches, if so, than it is a NA-113 variety, 1860 era Naval button manufactured by Steele & Johnson.

* SUPERIOR * QUALITY, between two rings of hyphens, 2 piece, ca. 1860

With wear, most likely the dots you see, yes, the photo or drawing in the book is not too clear either. If solid lines for sure, then more research would be needed.
