I found this button a while back and have not been able to get an age on it.
It has a backmark of "P & H Paris" and appears to be off a woman's coat (?)
I've been unable to find this backmark but maybe someone on this forum can help.
Thanks!
The only listing in the McGuinn-&-Bazelon book on button backmark dating for a "P&H / Paris" backmark is the firm of Alfred Parent & Th. Hamet. The firm was founded in 1825 as LeTourneau, Parent, & Hamet. Your specific P&H backmark is said to date from 1858 to 1888. The firm seems to have stopped making buttons after 1914.
But your button's construction (flat brass 1-piece with a narrow APPLIED rim) is what button-collectors in America call a "Jacksonian" type button... which dates from the late-1820s through 1830s. So, either your button's manufacturer used the simple "P&H / Paris" backmark earlier than 1858, or it was made between 1858 and 1888. Its construction makes me suspect it is from before 1858.
