Thanks Almy. Will do more research.It's an interesting button. Your oblique lighting helps. The lettering appears to be raised rather than impressed which indicates an earlier type of these British imported buttons, probably early 1700s. I too can see the treble standard traced by Sarge, and what could be something like J A Davis around the opposite side from the standard gilt. You might be able to find a name match among the old Birmingham button manufacturing firms.

I think it might possibly read J. MANN'S TREBLE STANDARD for Joseph Mann of Birmingham, U.K. (1800-1843).
