Hello,

I have been trying to identify this button but to no avail. Have searched 100-200 pages in Albert's book but did not see it. It is not a New Hampshire or an Engineers button. I have tried to outline the details I can see so you can see what I can.

The central feature of the button eludes me, but there appears to be a sunburst on the right hand side. Above the central details are 3 stars, which is why I don't think it is a New Hampshire. There are words or letters at the top and bottom as well, but I cannot read them. The backmark is clear and marked in the photo.

This button is of one piece design and is slightly domed - not flat. The diameter is 20mm.

Thank you for any information,
Still Waters

Try putting a piece of paper on top of it and take a pencil and rub across, start off light and then go darker, I bet you will be able to see some things better, maybe. Hope it helps, Ken.

great advise Shadowmanflash, that surely help with markings and detail.

I think it is a ENGINEER'S BUTTON

But i have not seen one with that marking. i am no expert but i would say from my searches so far it is surely from Civil War times.

It's 1820's to 30's I'm sure it is not an engineer but am not sure what it is. How did you clean it? There are several ways a button can be cleaned. Buckleboy has a good post on that. You might put some talcum or baby powder on it and light rub the powder of the high parts with your finger. Not being able to see that button in person I would be afraid on giving any advice to clean it.

Soak in peroxide for a bit to thin out the corrosion. Brush it lightly, and let air dry, and go from there. Looks like an interesting find.

That's it, well done and a cool find :icon_thumright: :hello2:

That's it, but doesn't sound like a clear cut ID. I did not see it in Alberts, and seen buttons from that school which don't match. I could have easily missed something, only spent maybe 10 minutes. It's a very nice find whatever it turns out to be.

Old post but interesting. Has this been solved?

Others are being found. Re: The text states " Colombia Libertad" aka Liberty for Colombia im hoping for a good button here bbut I dont know

Steve in PA says
I found mine on the Port Rebublic, VA battlefield. I know of a handfull of others that have been dug, all from Civil War sites. They are 1820's Columbian army buttons. I believe there may have been a surplus of these buttons on hand somewhere and Confederates got their hands on them and used them.
