I dug this old button up at the farm today. Any idea what I found, or how old it is?
I didn't want to scrub clean the back anymore, as it looks like it may be removing the patina.
I think it may say "BEST PLATED" (?), but am not sure. I can make out the "EST" on the first word, and "PLAT" on the next word, but that is about it.
The top is flat / plain with some shine still on it. As you can see, it is close to the size of a nickel.
Any button experts out there?
Thanks again for your help, and have a great weekend.
MM

I believe it would be a civilian pewter button from the early 19th century. "Best plated" is quite possibly correct and I wouldn't be surpised if it say "London" across from what you can read.

Can't find nuthin on that baby 'cept what Ben says... some with "best plated" say London, some don't. Some one with a book will tell ya' hopefully. ;)

It's a beauty! And yea it looks pewter.

Nice button! :)
