Picked this up at a local thrift store for a few dollars. It looks like a vintage illustration (checked under loop). Great subject matter. Early "Woman's Lib. " LOL. I need help with the signature...can't make out the name. Any other information would be appreciated. Thanks! It says "Bachelor's Club No Trespassing." The bag has a bunch of shot men. Measures 17" X 27"

Well I see nothing on the Top Hat. However, I may have to detract my statement that the piece feels English since the Lady is definitely carrying a Winchester 1897 Pump Shotgun. Although it is not impossible that a Lady in England would be carrying a Winchester 1897 Shotgun, it is somewhat unlikely, so the subject matter may have actually been in the United States and the Artist might be an American. I noticed this before I wrote my previous post but blew it off, so sorry! There is always a chance that the subject matter was in England and the Artist an American or vice versa.

Don and River Rat are on it!

Harold Thomas Denison - 1887 - 1940

Looks like he made his living mostly as a cartoonist and illustrator for magazines in the teens and 20's.

American illustrator, painter, and printmaker, born in Richmond, Michigan, trained at the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago
Academy of Fine Arts, and the Art Students League in New York.
Known primarily for his portrayal of rural subjects, his drawings
appeared in magazines such as Life , The New Yorker , and Liberty . He
also did commercial work and provided the illustrations for Stephen
Vincent Benet's The Devil and Daniel Webster (1937). He worked primarily
in watercolor and etchings, but also did illustrations.

Agree. I've also been looking for a matching signature and don't find anything even close. Everything has his first name spelled out.

The watercolor still seems like his style and content, though.

Wow! What a great piece, you did well in saving that.

Based on DCMatt's info about Denison I noticed the date (09) at the end of the signature which would put Denison's age around 22-years when he completed this work as a student. . . or just out of school.
Also, the opaque "China White" paint medium outlining the main subject suggests that this illustration "may" have at one time been prepared for color publication. . . or used to "hide" unintentional blemishes/mistakes and make the color separation in the printing process easier.

Are there any notes by the artist on the back of this piece?
