I believe it is some type of hanger but for what, I have no idea! I have never seen a buttplate shaped like that and I have a very good knowledge of most that were ever made.

I believe it is a union army suspender buckle. You used the flat wider end to put a suspender through and the round bottom slipped over a button. Frank

I know what it is but don`t know the name for them. This piece is bent, The bottom section which connects the two sides should be folded up against them. This thing is some sort of a keeper that would slide over the end of a bolt and then lock in place. These are similar to J-nuts that used to hold the body side molding onto a car. Smaller versions of these are used on the ends of linkages that control locks in car doors.
