Greetings and thanks for looking at my pitiful plea for assistance!

I went out and tried a few parks and while digging around the base of a very large Oak tree, I found these two items about 6" down. the first one looks like it might be some part from either a door hinge or furniture. It much heavier than it looks and appears to have been created by pouring metal into a mold. (3.25" long and 1.5" across) I noticed that the left hand design - to the left of the star in the middle - has a "cross bar" and the one on the right side does not. That made me curious as to why someone would make a piece like this and not have the sides match?

The second one is rather ornate - 2.25" across - and has a tiny hinge near the back to open up both covers. O don't dare open it as I might break it. It's not in the best shape and I was hoping to clean it up a bit first. I can see copper in a few of the spots where the black stains have worn away, so it might be made out of this metal. I'm at a loss as to what this is. Perhaps the wonderful (and extremely intelligent) people here on this forum can offer some clues for me?

Thanks in advance!!

A member of this site replied to another post I had up and said he found a piece very much like mine (star design included) and said it was made of lead and may be a carriage decoration. (Member: JuJu)

Your second piece screams Victorian period, but as far as what its function may have been I dont know??

Ditto on the 2nd piece being from the Victorian era. The top photo looks to be some type of decorative finial; perhaps for a clock. It maybe from the late Hepplewhite era, but everything except the star says Victorian. I'd like to see a photo of the back of the round piece. Nice finds, Breezie

Thanks for the ID help on these!!

I'll post a few more photos of the round piece. One from the side after I dug it up, another with a close up of the "hinge" area and a back side view.

I did find one smaller "mystery" piece near these but I don't know if it's from the same era or not. It looks like a tie-tack or something and is kind of crusted up. It has the same ornate-style as the round piece and might be made of either brass or copper. I'll post some photos of it as well in case it helps with the other ID.

Thanks again for the help!!! :)

With regards to the "heavy metal hinge" ... Here is a piece similar to yours in my collection of mystery relics .. In the first photo, I chopped it off at about the point your piece is broken off at, just for comparison purposes. The second photo is the piece in its entirety. The third photo is the back. I think it must have been part of a drawer pull or something of that nature, as there is a channel on the back that must have secured a ring or something.
