Im looking into buying an ACE 250 MD and was wondering if after I buy it, will I be satisfied with my purchase or will I be wishing I went with another brand in the same money range? Also will I wish I went with a more expensive unit to begin with. Currently I only have a cheapo BH and have had it sense 97' and have never been pleased with the performance. Getting ready to med retire from the Marines and unable to work anymore, need something to fill my time. Thank ya'll for any response.....Bill

Bill, everything I've heard about the ACE250 has been good. I have a Minelab Soverein Elite and I've never used anything else so I would not be able to compare them. I'm sure someone on here will have some really good advice for you. You've picked a really good addiction, um, I mean hobby to occupy your time. Welcome to the forum and I'm looking forward to some great finds from you.

My advice would be to buy the best MD you can afford. If you go cheap you will probably regret it later.

What did you mean by you "had it sense 97' "? You didn't find something buried 97' with your BH did you?

Hi !!

The truth is that not MD is most important. Most important thing is if You have a luck or not... ;)
For example. Me and my wife went for a search. I have PrizmV she has ACE250.
I found some cooper Russian coins in a bad condition, she picked up a silver coin dated 1622...
Pure luck, that's important. ;D

ACE 250 is worth buying, my wife does not complain about it. I, personally, prefer my Prizm V.

for the money the ace 250 cannot be beat.

I have no regrets about my ace 250. Though I do wish I had a water proof detector to go into the water and detect, get to swim and detect at the same time. Just something to think about if your down south near alot of beaches.

Hey Jarhead. There are a few of us here. If you want American Made quality then a detector from Whites is what you're looking for. I have only been MD'ing for about 9 months now and consider myself pretty much a newbie. I researched and found that a Whites MXT was the right detector for me. I use it in the woods for relics, at the beach for coins and jewelry, and in the local streams for a little prospecting. Hasn't let me down yet. Very reliable. I'm sure you'll have others voice their opinions too. BTW, I was in weapons too, 0351/0352 AT TOW CO., 2nd Tanks Bn. Camp LeJuene. Sorry to hear about the med discharge. I hope they're taking care of you. If you need anything just holler. There's a very tight group of people here on T'net. It reminds me of the Corps. Good Luck and keep in touch. SEMPER FI

That's a tough question... If you get a really high end machine and then decide you don't like detecting or it isn't going to work out due to a physical condition you have, that could suck a little. On the other hand, if you get the 250 and then want something a little better in a year...

I bought the 250 for my first new machine and really like it. If I had to do it over again I would have given a lot of thought to getting a high end machine right from the start. Although, you could use the 250 to get a ton of practice and use the clad towards a higher end model, that could take a while though...

i don't know,i kind of have a different take on it. for a first machine the ace is phenomenal. it does an awefull lot for a little money and if you decide after six months that detecting is not for you ,you are not out too much money.if you do decide to stick with it,and to upgrade to a better machine, the ace will still make an excellent backup detector.it is absolutely deadly on coins that are in the 1 to 5 inches deep range!even though i recently posted that i am beginning to see its limitations,i still think its an unbelievable machine for what i paid for it.i have only had it four months and it has already almost halfway paid for itself in clad finds!

Thank you all for the replies. Although I have been doing this for awhile now since 1997, I am extreamly limited on income. About ready to retire, need to buy a house back home in Ohio and taking care of the wife and 3 kids. Not to mention that all of my hobies seem to be expensive restoring classic muscle cars and trying to build salt water fish tanks. But that was good advise about using the clad I find with the ACE to upgrade later. thanks again.

I own an ACE 250 as well as a top of the line Garretts product. I also own a near top of the line BH product. For one to say that brand X is better than brand Y would not be completely truthful. All the USA made detectors on the market today cover a wide range of capabilities for the detecting market. You need to decide what type of detecting you will be doing and buy a detector that fits your needs. If you primarily intend to coin shoot and hunt places like school grounds, parks, etc., the ACE 250 will do anything you ask of it and much more for the around $200.00 price tag. It may be the best bargain out there right now. Once you get hands on experience in detecting and learn the ropes you will no doubt want to upgrade to a detector with more versatitlity or for specific uses such as beach and surf detecting. Everyone who takes the hobby seriously will reach that point at some time. When you do, that is the time to consider what bells and whistles you need to satisfy your ability and practical use. By all mean if you get the ACE, you will want to keep it as backup for your new super whizbang detector. When I just want to get out and do a little coin shooting or do a quick search of a new aream or just a fun hunt, I still depend on the ACE to do the preliminary survey and then take out the big gun when I get down to the serious detecting chores. From the description of what you plan to do for the time being I think the ACE 250 will work splendidly for you. JIM

Strictly a personal opinion choice, mine is get the detector you want, I finally did after buying 5. my first choice is Whites, I cannot imagine a better detector than my Spectrum XLT, it is quite simply the most versatile machine out there, and ebay seems to be a good place to look for one now for under $500, a definite deal. I also use a Tesoro De Leon, it too is simply an awesome machine, but they all hunt in their own ways, I cannot comment on Garrett machines, but the name surely is synonimous with metal detecting, so it would probably serve you well, but be aware that most entry level machines are just that, and your abilities will be limited to the capabilities of what you use, I have been researching the new Tesoro Tejon, it is a multi discriminator trigger actuated machine, and in my opinion one of the best going right now for all purpose detecting, check it out.

I agree with everthing said here and the only thing I can add is if you buy one detector and decide to sell it the resale value on most is excellent. The BH seems to be the lowest in resale but all the others seem excellent. Not to knock BH as I own one but it just seems to be the way it is. HH
