I have found some info regarding the locations of some CW campsites, and would like some advice on how best to search the area to pinpoint the exact location of the camps. What I have is info saying "we marched to (here) and camped..." I know where the location is but once there, how do I narrow down my search area?
Thanks for any help.
Michael
PS- This site is supposed to be along a river at at bridge/crossing, and my understanding is that it is currently farmland/woods at the present time...

If it's close to northern VA I'll SHOW you how to detect it..... ;)

Mig73, you might look for areas along a ridge line or a clearing surrounded by larger trees. Remember several things, 1) what are small trees and saplings now were'nt there 140 or so years ago. 2) water sources were important to a camp, the river may have changed course a bit over time and depending on the time of year small streams can dry up. 3) look for depressions in the ground that are raised in the middle, they used to cut drain trenches around tent areas, 4) look along banks near what may have been the upper banks of a river or stream, if they buried their trash it usually wasn't all that deep and some may just be tossed over the side. Unfortunately human nature hasen't changed that much over the years.
JMO and good luck in your search. HH
