I need some advice?I want to buy a metal detector in order to search beaches and also look for old coins. I?m somewhat familiar with MD?s but there are so many out there I?m not sure which one to buy. Money isn?t really an issue because I consider a metal detector an investment. I was looking at Fisher?s coin strike (http://www.detection.com/Fisher/coinstrike.html) and I?ve also heard that Tesoro?s are good but I need an expert?s opinion.

I checked out the Explorer 2 and it looks good, but I was wondering if it's worth the extra money or if it would just be overkill (with 28 frequencies and all). I don't mind spending more money to get a nice MD but I also am looking at cost versus benefit. So in your opinion is the Explorer worth it's price?

If you have any dealers within driving distance you might think about asking if they have any you can try out. Find out what YOU like best. If there are detecting clubs in your area talk to the members. Ask what kind of detector they use and why. I think some detectors work better in some parts of the country than others.
Others may tell you differently but I believe that any of the "brand" name detectors in the same price range will be fairly similar in performance. Some will work better on wet, salt beaches, some have bells and whistles that you may not need, some have a wider variety of coils available making them more versatile. The list goes on. A lot of people here believe the detector they own is the best. Including me. I wouldn't trade mine for any other. Right now it's perfect for the kind of detecting I do. You need to find a way to test drive as many as you can and THEN make a decision. Take rave reviews of ANY detectors with a grain of salt.
There is a lot of very good detectors out there made by a variety of companies.
