My first advice would be..BUY A LESCHE !!
Or, dip the handle of yours in plastidip about 5 x's, that'll fix it right up.

Camping shovel:

pro's-
strong
easy
use in all soil types with ease

con's-
big

the "grip" on many of those diggers is just a bicycle grip. cut off the old grip with a knife, get a new grip at a bike shop that fits the tool, mix up some soapy water, dip the tool handle in the soapy water and coat the inside of the grip with it also. work new grip onto tool and let it sit overnight so it dries.

if you've just plain given up check this guy out...

$10 at target. all welded construction. has root cutter on side and on tip. why spend more?

Thanks re-tec, and thanks all. I will try re-tek's advice, since I have had this tool so long. Otherwise, I'll "Pony Up" and get the LESCHE!

Hello everyone,
I recently bought one of those fiskars digging tools, and for me it was very hard to get the plugs started, and on the first trip out the handle broke. I am in Law enforcement and I have tons of knives so I started using on of my spider co knives with serrated blade. Let me tell you what It cuts through most grass and roots like butter. Check out the link below, it says 85 dollars, but there are tons of places online you can get them for less than 50 buck. John

I bought one of the Ames (TrueTemper) tools, similar to the Fiskars. I'm 230 pounds & have "leaned" on it pretty hard several times & haven't hurt it. Instructions show the butt of the handle being used as a hammer, and it's heavily built. About $13 at Lowes.

maybe you got one with a bum weld. i lean into mine pretty hard and i'm 250. no problems yet. i've pried rocks out with it! i get my plugs started by working it into the ground with a side to side motion. its a little different than using a knife.

Hey Smitty,
I picked up the same thing for $13 at a homedepot. Liked it enough that I went out and got a second. The one I use primarily looks the same, no damage. Works and cuts good.

I could tell by it's weight when I held one in my hand it was well-built. I've been more than pleased with mine too. lol, kinda glad I couldn't locate a Fiskars locally, not knocking their tools, I've used others of that brand, they're good tools.

I have used this knife since day one of my career, 29 years hunting now. It's a Korean war era marine bayonette . I padded the plastic handle to make it easier on the hand. I guess it's not the greatest for rooted areas as it has not serrations on the blade. I keep her sharp and it cuts beautiful plugs that when replaced are hard to tell I was ever there. It's really strong for prying relics out of the hole too.

I am pretty sure you can get one like it at an army surplus store, or eBay.

Good luck.
