Hello,

I managed to finally find my first piece of cut spanish silver over the weekend. I know it is a pistareen from Philip the Fifth, but I am hoping that someone out there can hopefully narrow down the date range based on the markings on the coin. The coin measures 14mm from the cut point to the rim in both directions. Thank you in advance for any help or insight.

Anthony

I think you have a 1/4 of a 2-reale machine struck coin. The F is the initial of the assayer at the Segovia mint (years 1719 to 1729).

Here is a previous posting with a picture of the entire coin someone found in NY last year.

Interesting that both similar coins were found in northeast.

Why that's 4 bits. Coins cut into 4 pieces was the origin of the term "bits" for quarters. Monty

That's a very nice one. They didn't seem to cut silver in my area so rare to find for me.

Thank you for the replies. I reviewed the pistareen file and thought I had the date range, but I wanted to have it confirmed. I greatly appreciate the help, thanks!

And Iron Patch - your finds blow mine away, each region has it's flavor, and your area gives up lots of nice tickets that we don't get here.

Correct me if Im wrong but its actually a 1/2 bit. Total of 2 Reale (2 bits) cut in 4 equal quarters would be 1/2 bit each. :)

The term originated from an 8 Reale (one dollar) which was 8 bits, cut into 4 equal parts was 2 bits each. Did you ever hear "give me 2 bits"? (a quarter) ;D
