I dug this beaten up hilt on the property a while ago and wondered if anyone could give an earliest possible date for this style? It seems pretty clear from the axe marks on it that it was forced off the blade to probably scrap the brass at some point (before anybody though a sword hilt would be cool to not beat to a pulp!). I also think it was scrapped due to the quantities of lead and other unrelated non-ferrous junk I found in the same vicinity. Anyway, anyone able to venture a good guess as to the date? I've seen militry swords of this design form the 1830's (this seems to be civilian) , but I wondered if this could be earlier as there was a lot of War of 1812 action nearbye. Thanks for looking
