This medal is 45mm, and 3mm thick. I don't know what it's made of, some sort of brass composite. It sounds odd for a brass medal of this size.

I hope I don't have the reverse upside down...

The Chinese inscription translated reads..." Checkmate,... Winsomesoon..."

Without sounding politically incorrect, try a local Chinese restaurant.

It's a poem about two old gentlemen playing the game.

There is one person who likes to play chess.

one day he saw a cave while going to cut some wood for burning.

There were two guys playing chess there.

He had a look at there.

He found his tool broken after the chess game over.

And there were one hundred years passed before he came back to his home.

This was written by a person from the Qing dynasty there are new ones and old ones from that time too.

( in case you are wondering my sister in law is 100% Chinese)

I'm told that the front of the coin says "Qi xian". "Qi" means chess and "xian" is something like gods, so the men could be gods. While foreigners call this game Chinese Chess, or a number of other things, in China, they simply call this game Chess.

The reverse is supposed to be poem written by Zhu Xi, who was a philosopher during the Song Dynasty and lived in China from ~1130-1200. The poem is found here:

I have already contacted the people at these websites, asking if they knew anything about it

I showed this item to my boss who is from China.

She said the two guys playing chess are like "chess gods". Not Gods with a capital G, but higher than a normal person.

The poem was a little hard for her to translate to me, but basically it means:

The guys are having a chess "war".

They know each other well.

They don't care what is happening in the 'real world'.

They don't notice that a long, long time is passing.

She said she never saw anything like it before.
The Chinese characters are 'old style'.
It is not a money coin.

Matt, thanks for showing it to her!

I'm wondering if it was some sort of award medal.

An acquaintance of mine sent pics of it to a guy in Singapore, who seems to be an elderly man and an educator who is involved with teaching xiangqi.
