Never mind. It's a Metropolitan Street RY. CO. Button. No information on the Waterbury site but it should be easy enough to look up.

The button actually reads Metropolitan Street RY. Co. Some references says it means Railway Company and others say Railroad Company. And, it probably does date to the late 1800s-very early 1900s.

Nice button! I have the Van Court Transportation Uniform Buttons Vol. 2 "Transit" book and it lists this button with the New York company. Here is info. from the book:

I figured the odds were in favor of it being the New York line considering the OPs location.
