Hi All, I found this button near a Civil War battery and I was wondering if anyone could identify if it was period or worth anything before I attempt to clean it. Thanks for the help!

Hi RR-
1st, I would clean no more...I think it looks pretty awesome. Next, Google US Great Seal Button. I found a couple a few months ago right along side CW bullets, and was educated here on TN about the buttons. Post CW. Nice job, it looks great as is. BTW, I am not a button expert though.

Thanks! Your more of an expert than me! :)

Looks like a US Marine Great Seal button probably WWI. I agree with Tokenman as I would clean no more. Dry brush and toothpick. Sometimes I wet mine just to take pictures but I don't use water when cleaning. It will remove the patina. These buttons are found a lot in CW sites but may be because an old house was in the area. Same reason we find wheat pennies in the sites.

Thanks bud, I did find a 1934 wheat in the same area.

1902-Present, so its the backmark that will narrow the date. Can you read it?

I have to do some more picking on the back before I can read it. Thanks for the info Cru!

Yes that is a U.S Army Great seal button and if you can clean the back some and read the back mark on it and with Albert's button may track down when they were made. In non dug just a few dollars and dug not much value. They are a big honking 2 piece button and often on overcoats not uniforms.

Thanks guys! It's the Meyer/arrow/Metal one shown on this page

Hi what a coincidence i have just mentioned this same button on another thread , and wanted to post a pic of my button for id.
You have the self and same button, as have in my hand at this moment .I think that it is WW1 .
I will post a pic up tomorrow along with some other badges and buttons from the same field
Regards

I also think it's a WW1 button as I have found one just like it. Nice find!
