Trying to help someone ID this button. He says, "I dug up this button on my property in San Luis Obispo CA. I'm guessing from local history that it might be US Coast Guard, but I can't find an exact match. Can anyone help me with the ID and age? it is metal, possibly brass. the back is rusted over."

Any Ideas?

It's very close to a pre civil war navy button ??... Cool find.:icon_thumleft:

Beings as the back is rusted out I would lean towards a Fashion button made in the likeness of a military button.

Thanks all for looking. Another stumper!

I've never seen that emblem before. As HuntinDog mentioned, having an iron back very strongly indicates it is a civilian Fashion button rather than any country's actual Military-issue Navy button.

The bird's body, and its wings, look much more like a seagull than an eagle. It's a beautiful Artistic concept, morphing the bird's tail into the anchor's top.

That style of anchor, having very curved flukes and fluke-tips is similar to some central-European navy button anchors. Odd one to find in California.

If the back is rusted out steel then its probably a sudo-military fashion button from the 20th C. (early)

When I was little my parents bought me what I believe they said was a Navy jacket. it was for colder weather. I kind of remember the buttons on it because they remind me of this button so very much. I was probably 10-14 years old when I got the jacket and it had nothing to do with the Navy, other than I remembered it was styled after them ?

I have seen a lot of "navy themed" fashion buttons in my time, but I have never seen anything that even remotely comes close to this one. Not to say this isn't one, but if it is, it must be a unique one.

NEVER say UNIQUE.

It does, when your passionate about describing finds accurately.

Seems that lately no matter how accurate some are on identifying things for people it’s just not good enough. I’m gonna start taking pics of the books, pages, and item I’m describing so at least that point doesn’t get argued I don’t know what I’m talking about. I have a bunch of reference books but dad has a lot more. Since he’s gone I’ll make sure I hang on to those for even more reference points

Just to set the record straight, I am not disputing that it is .. or could be.. a civilian button as I stated above, nor does using the term UNIQUE deter from one being "passionate about describing finds accurately." Unique is simply defined as being the only one of its kind or unlike anything else. Until someone can produce an image or post an identical button, it is..at least for the moment.. by definition unique!

I’m not arguing the case of unique here. One mans trash is another mans treasure and anything in this world can and could be unique. I understand what the word unique means and guess what. Anything that is mass produced has the possibility of one or several of them having their own uniqueness. Nothing is the absolute same. I’m a identical twin but even identical twins just like anything else have their own unique things about them setting them apart from one another
