Found this down along the river and not sure what it is. Under the black tarnish it is silver colored metal. I tested it and it is not actual silver.
Forgot the reference in the picture, but it measures 6 1/2 inches long.
I have found silver jewelry and coins from the water and they looked the same. Looks like a nice find to me! DD

I think what you have is a piece of a woman's decorative belt. Breezie where are you when we need you. :icon_pirat:

Did someone call for moi? (Said in the same voice as: "Did someone call for rain?" I love that commercial. ) Duggap, this is a hard call for several reasons. First of all, if it were a Cap/Cloak Clasp as DirtDigler suggested, it would have to have a 'clasp' for easy on/off access. This one could have had a clasp on each end, but we don't know. It could be part of a Victorian necklace as Keith suggested since those had a tendency to be sooooooo gaudy. I think your idea of being part of a belt is another good possibility.

So Alex, we are back to square 1 not knowing exactly what it is. Without the end clasps or hooks, or finding a pic of the exact piece, there is really know way of nailing this one, but whether it is part of a necklace, belt, or cloak clasp, it's still a cool find! Breezie

Can you get any closer to it with the camera? Sometimes you can date it by looking at the way the links were made, or the way they were attatched to the medallion pieces. Right now I would be leaning towards a chain for clasping a cloak, only because it was my first impression.
Typically cloak clasp are short to keep the cloak up on your shoulders. But in some areas, it was fashion to let it hang behind you, and at the time of wearing armor and such 6 inch clasp would not be suprising for the cloak to fit over the armor, but most armor I have seen that intended a cloak for decrotive purposes had clasp actually on the armor.

This one could be for a riding cloak, or as said before could be a multi strand braclet, or a belt, dating it would make it a bit easier.

I doubt a necklace due tot he 6 inch span you mentioned, that would mean there was more to it, and they were usually longer.

A braclet maybe?
