This Tombac button was one of the first artifacts found over three years ago in northern Wake County, NC near the Wake Forest and Rolesville areas.
The site yielded one white metal "Tombac button". The button was discovered under an ancient Pecan tree which towers over the site. Tombac is a brass alloy with a high percentage of zinc and sometimes arsenic. This alloy has an appearance of aluminum in color.
Tombac buttons were widely used during 1770-1800 and are commonly found on Revolutionary War period sites. A light brown colored patina (oxide) covered the button upon original discovery.
The Tombac button recovered is light grey in color and shiny. A spun back exists. The button is a flat, one-piece button that measures 14mm in diameter and had a brass shank in place.
