My grandfather recently passed and I came across a Nazi medal & case. I'm not sure if the two items were associated, because I found them in separate areas of the house.

EDIT: Solved as Anschluss Commemorative Medal, and looking at others' images, it seems the box goes along with it!

Any ideas what the medal was given for?

here ya go The Anschluss Commemorative Medal (Die Medaille zur Erinnerung an den 13. März 1938) was a decoration of Nazi Germany awarded in the interwar period.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anschluss_Medal

The medal, known as the "Anschluss medal", was awarded to all those Austrians who contributed to or participated in the annexation as well as the members of the Austrian NSDAP. It was also awarded to German State officials and members of the German Wehrmacht and SS who marched into Austria.
It was awarded until December 13, 1940. In all 318,689 medals were awarded.

Cool Piece of History !

Definitely hanging on to it. I was super surprised to find it along with all of his coins.

For kicks, what does something like this sell for? I can't come up with any past sales of these online.

In germany such items are often found but this one is in amazing shape. All my time living overseas I have not seen one is such good shape.

Nice find.

I would guess they would have limited interest, however if the one above at $95 doesn't have the box,
I would guess yours could go as high as $200 to the right person :dontknow:

I've delt with Third Reich militaria ever since receiving my great uncle's bring backs in the late 1990's. I can assure you that is worth nothing less than $150 if you sold it privately or $75-$100 if you sold it to a dealer (rip off's). Congrats its a superb example that i would love to own. I'm sure there is more where that came from.. The average GI brought half a dufflebag of booty home. Sometimes including Mp-40's, helmets, daggers, ect... All of which can fetch sometimes several thousands in many cases..
