Natural stone or tool?

Found this interesting rock yesterday while tubing in a local creek. There was a well known Indian village in the general area and the arrowhead my friend found in my only other post here was found around this area as well. I am guessing natural but wanted to see what you all thought. It really does seem ground and polished around the edges and on the faces, but that could just be natural wear from being in the creek I would think. I wasn't really able to stop and look much because we were trying to beat the rain, but next week if it is nice I am going to poke around a bit more!

Thanks for the reply- it fits pretty nicely in your palm, you could certainly use it to grind.

Thanks GL! I didn't want to get my hopes up, as this would be my first actual artifact find! :icon_thumleft:

Could be a preform- what do you think they would have made it in to based on the shape? Maybe a small ax head or a chisel?

imo,you have an anvil/platform.i have a couple of them that are very similiar.they may have been a multi function tool.grinder,hammerstone,striking/grinding platform.it was definatley pecked into shape for a purpose.nice find

I am glad that it is an artifact! I was pretty sure it was but am really happy that more experienced people have confirmed it! Thanks again for all the posts.

I am headed back to the creek I found this object in on Saturday. The gravel bars tend to be on the opposite side of the creek from the areas where the bank is eroding and washing in...Should I look in the deep water under the bank that is washing in, or the gravel bars on the other side of the creek? Is there any tips any of you would care to share that might increase my odds of finding something else? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

This is a good thing. Wade into the water as far as you can(up river on the gravel bar). You'll see the rocks get bigger the deeper you go off the bar. Material and points travel(move down river) with LIKE size rocks.

I'd have to agree that, based on the picture, that's not a natural shape. Like everyone else I have no idea what it is but it's neat.

That is an early iPhone prototype dating back 8000+ years, probably from Atlantis.

Haha my first thought was definitely "Atlantis" when I picked it up :laughing7:
