001.JPG002.JPG003.JPG004.JPGFound this rock in southestern WV.When I found it, the first thought that came to mind was a mortar. From what I have learned in the past here on Tnet from some of you guys is that it is natural, without the evidence of swirl marks and stuff. But could it have been used by early man?maybe some kind of bowl,or is there any way to tell? There seems to be some kind of indention on one side, that kind of looks like where a thumb and fingers might have made a impression?Or maybe I am just doing some more wish full thinking:icon_scratch:Thank you guys!joe

To be sincerely honest with you, I do not believe that your item was used in any fashion as a metate or grinding bowl. I know that I am not from your area, but there is just no characteristics and wear to suggest it's use as a metate grinding bowl. Please continue to hunt for artifacts as you are identifying the right shapes. :icon_thumright:

It appears to be piece of fine grain pink quartzite that has a concave shape fracture.
