Very nice, not something I would post a picture of. Hopefully you didnt use a gps enabled phone or camera when you took the picture. What is your intentions here?

That is definitely a man-made carving and from those lines in the photo, it is very close to a roadway or a utility right-of-way. Either situation will dictate that you use extreme caution to keep you "business" strictly YOUR OWN. Casca posted a great point. There are hackers lurking about that can determine things you don't want to reveal.

When you can safely manage it; take a very close look at that monument for any signs and symbols anywhere on or around it. Copy those things you find and plot them on a drawing in their relationship to the main carving. There may be only a "V" shape on the head area pointing to the main direction indicator. That will show which way to proceed to look for the next sign.

EDIT: If this IS on a highway, is there any possibility that it is a fairly recent carving done by some "artsy" college loon? Just wondering. Some of those art types have come up with some delusional ideas. Like the one guy, several years ago who wanted to drap miles of canvas along the walls of a canyon to paint HIS art upon for the "enjoyment" of others. Thank goodness he got no where with that. LOL Perhaps a latter day sculptor did that lion/tiger for his own "bragging" rights. That is either a female lion (no mane) or it is a tiger or panther. Maybe it's someone's solilique to the "endangered puma". This is something you must check. I am not making fun of your find. While looking for other signs on the carving, see if there are any names or initials on the base......like an artist would leave. You could save yourself some embarrassment.

The real reason I'm kinda leery at this point is that the surface of the carving and those surrounding rocks is thouroughly pockmarked by weather errosion, yet the cat's ears, nose, and chin are still VERY sharply defined. Curious.

Very possible a trail marker, perhaps the heigth would give a clue, about 44 inches is in my opinion is a reference to 1/4 mile, 1320 feet, if you follow it either direction you may find corner markers. Markers every 1320 feet, generally will be 8 between corner markers. If it looks the same on both sides then it may indicate a leaque square on both sides, one on the right and one one the left, the figure should be looking forward and backward toward the north and south would be another clue. Good post

It is along a utility right of way.....I am very sure it is not new as I have passed by it for over 40 years now, (on the way to an agate dig). My late father called the agate lion agate because of the carving, (he started digging the agate before WWII). If it is of any value, there is a spring that is about 100 yards directly east of the "cat". The cat itself measures approx. 26 feet in length, and approx. 7 feet tall. Does a resting lion have a particular meaning? (bytheway...no gps device is ever with me, I only use "old school" technology, still, thanks for the heads up).

Bonutr, This just my guess but if it is about 6o inches high and it does look spanish to me then its possible that that its a corner marker for a league square, if its 72 inches or so then I would call it a monument and possibly it might show the direction to a Royal Trail and thats just a guess on my part, I believe all this stuff is pretry new to the site and everybody is just learning as we go so to speak. Twenty six feet long may indicate that 6 ft = 2.5 miles X 4 = 10 miles when its just a head it seems only one direction, when it has a profile then it shows two directions seems to be the order of business

bontr,
its a cat all right but it was done by the Spanish as a monument there is a dog, a white dog, half way back on t he cats side..nicely done too and what looks like a skull on the rear..making this 3 elements that are needed for a confirmed monument and in addition to the 3 elements the negative space under his chin is a perfect arrow head, classic in design the area down at the bedrock of the arrow head shows work, and some bit of rock to complete the proper shape of the arrowhead..The monument wants you to go to the left. no doubt about it..take a compass bearing on t he back end of the lion and walk that line..see what your looking at. this is more t an likely an Alpha- would not surprise me if the CAT looking SOUTH-and the Omega is north of this rock.
