Does this material appear to be a hard stone? I noticed also, upper left of the square, a smaller rectangle. The indent next to your thumb is also interesting. Unless the material is of some type of crystal, the anomalies would probably not be natural.

possible glendonite or similar stone.

the crystal weathers out of the surrounding stone.

I have a stone on my mantle that has the same exact square hole in it. It is in a riverwashed limestone cobblestone I found in the Ohio river while prospecting. I thought it I had the only one in existence till now. My theory was that a salt or water soluble crystal formed in the rock and then years of weathering left a square hole in it. I have never had it looked at by a geologist, but might now that I have seen another.

Troll, could we see a pic of your stone please?

Probably this peble was a piece of rock matrix surrounding a pyrite or other perfect cubic crystal that eventually "fell out" of its case...

Check this pic Pyrite Crystals

Skeeterd,
I don't have a pic yet, but I will get it on here when I find time. Essentially the same squarte hole in a purple limestone river pebble. square in the pebble is 1/4" square and deep. Being that I found it in the Ohio river in SE Indiana, I presume it traveled to me from Appalachia via the river. The only place I have seen purple limestone is PA and AZ. I am sure it occurs in OH as well. It is a cool little stone.

That is neat, I have found similar as a kid.....now I wish I would of kept them. I have also found, but only once, it was almost a completely square rock with a perfect round circle through it and it is right in the middle of the rock. As a kid I was like, that's weird and then tried to skip it off the water.....stupid kid...lol
