Detector(s) used
Fisher 1265x, F2 Nautlius DMC IIb
I found this a few years ago while metal detecting, it was a good 14 inches in the ground (not metal) My target ended of being an old can but this was down in the hole with it. I've asked a few others about this in the past but I've gotten so many different answers. So I decided to post it here to see what everyone thinks. When I first found it I thought I had an ancient axehead. :dontknow:

Let's see both sides. My rules say it has to be worked on both sides and fit into your hand comfortably. Maybe not with an ax, but try it anyway.

It fits really well in my right hand. also here is the other side, sorry about pic quality, I had to use a webcam for this one. I have been told it was some sort of tool (can't remember the name) unfinished, I was told it was a hand axe, and a camp fire rock, whatever that maybe

It doesn't look like any hoe I've ever seen.

I know, I just don't think it looks like a hoe. I could be wrong. I'll pass the info to an archie friend of mine and see if he can figure it out.

Definitely fits the "worked on both sides" rule. But it doesn't look too "haftable". Gotta be a hand tool. Show us how it fits in your hand.

This is a large knife blade, Arcaic or earlier probably, seen many similar. Could have been hafted or hand held. Thanks, marco001

Certainly a man-made tool, either way. Maybe the word you were thinking of is celt? Some hand-held tools must've had multiple uses. Unless it was hafted, it could serve a number of purposes. Scraper, knife, digging implement, etc. That depth might indicate the Archaic Period, depending on a variety of factors. I recovered a Clovis point from almost 3' down. I wanted to dig down to that level to see if there were more. Then I realized the futility of hunting spear points in deep ground. Nice find!
