First...
I want to say that by no means am I knowledgeable in textiles.
BUT...
With that said... I am knowledgable in "old".
I have seen similar things like this.
Usually in museums.
This has got to be an ancient textile IMO...
AND...
I would be extremely careful with this piece.
It is deteriorating as we type.
Carefully place item in dry cool place... and try not to handle it.
The more you touch this the more damage is occurring... even if you cannot see it.
This is IMO a rare special thing you have run across...
Just for examples I will include a link to the first Google search I made for you.
What do you think ?
Looks like a scrap of ~1,500 year old ancient Egyptian Coptic textile, the animal looks like a lion. If that's what it is then 50-75 would be my guess at value. Seems that a whole lot was looted and shipped to western markets in the 19th through mid 20th century. Nice score.
It is in a frame. Thank you for the tip on what it is, I can see the lion now, it was that it's main is partially missing making it look like a monkey head. I agree it is not from the Americas. I Imagine it would be difficult to find anything like this today regardless of size and condition.
