Northwestern Arkansas. Found this interesting disk shaped object barely sticking out of a vertical cut creek bank roughly chest high at a known location where I've found a few artifacts here & there in the past. It was caked heavily on both sides with that hardpan clay & pebble type material which has a similar consistency to Quickcrete & is a real pain to remove.
Rather than chip away at the material, I soaked it in vinegar for a week to loosen it up & was able to clean up one side well enough to reveal a round indention right dead center of the disk. The other side doesn't want to come clean quite as easily.
It looks as though it has been chipped & shaped intentionally into a near perfect circle all around the outside, though I'm not 100% certain about that. Not sure what it's made of just yet either. It seems to range between 1/4" to 1/2 inch thick. Have no idea how fragile it might be so I'm definitely taking my time with getting it cleaned up. If anyone has any tips on how to best remove the caked on material please let me know.
Anyone ever seen anything similar or have any thoughts on what this might be? Can't wait to hear you guy's input.
