Hello. This is first post as I am new to TreasureNet. I recently found what I believe to be a native american chipped axe head. I am a newbee to identifying native american stone artifacts and am seeking comments, guidance, suggestions and just plain old feedback from anyone who might understand what this is or how old it could be and anything interesting about this tool. If you look close, it looks like you can see marks cordage left that held the stone to the handle. I dug this up while planting a tree in my side yard. Doe anyone have any thought? Thank you for reading this and for any comment you might have.

It’s not an axe head , I would say it’s just a natural rock not an artifact

looks like a sand stone type of material, way to soft for a ax...

Definitely cool!

Let me know if you need your yard detected (: I’m close by and I have a extra machine if you don’t have one(;

The marks on it may be from plow strikes if it was in the field.

Thank you for the quick and good responses. I'm not sure of the type of rock but it doesn't appear to be sandstone, it's harder than that. But I am not sure. There are many very unnatural looking groves that appear to be man made given their geometry and if you follow them around the stone it outlines where some type of cordage would have been to hold the stone to a handle. And there is a perfect groove on the side that would accept a wood handle nicely. It's hard to get that from the pictures. It's a small piece about 5 inches long. From the research I have done, it wouldn't have been used to chop wood but more as a weapon. Again, I'm new to this but just trying to get as much information as I can. If anyone knows of a good website with information I would appreciate you passing it along. At the end of the day, if it is only a stone, it's a pretty cool stone.

Joe-Dirt - I'll let you know. :)

Thanks again.

Sorry just a rock......

I agree, it does not look like an artifact, however, you may consider posting it in the North American Indian Artifacts forum, to see what their opinions are.

Great thing to ask and learn there out there you will find lots of cool stuff

I would agree it's not an artefact and certainly not an axe-head. It does look like broken sandstone. I'm always puzzled by the belief that sandstone is a soft rock. Quartz-cemented sandstone is actually an extremely hard rock, but the difficulty in getting it to a sharp edge and its brittleness generally makes it unsuitable for tools such as axes.

I wold recommend checking out the North American Indian artifacts forum on here you can learn a lot and there’s thousands of pictures of artifacts you can look at to get an idea of what to look for

Sorry, not an axe, not an artifact either, it is natural rock with erosion.

Welcome to TreasureNet.

Thanks for the good opinions, advice and welcomes everyone. I'll do a little digging in the North American Indian Artifacts forum but it sounds like I have a really cool rock.

Interesting find! I'm not sure about it being an axe head, but keep looking for relics. :icon_thumleft:

No need to post it in artifact forum, it isnt an indian artifact. Keep looking and get a book on indian artifacts to help to learn to identify them.
