Hello All,
I need help identifying the Native American artifact shown in the pictures. I assume it is some kind of axe, but other than that I don't have a clue! I found this piece about 40 years ago in my grandfather's tobacco field in south central Virginia (about 25 miles north of Danville, VA.) I don't know if you can tell from the pics, but the top of the piece is roughly chiseled and rises to it's thickest point at the center line; however, the back is completely flat. The side view pic shows this feature fairly well. I included a pic showing the chip in the stone because the inside of the piece seems to be black. If you know anything about south central VA, you know we have red clay here, so the outside appears reddish. The piece is 5" long.
I would love to know what tribe this piece may be attributed to, a time period, and the value (if any), but any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time!

How big is this item? It looks like it has the right shape but it also looks natural. You should post this in theNative American forum. Those folks would know what you have.

I have found a few that look real close to yours. I live west of Martinsville VA. It looks like a crude flaked ax and could have been made during about any time period but is most likely archaic. Tribal attribution would be nearly impossible. Value isn't much. Maybe $15 to $25.
