Naples, Florida

What I've read on here they will put you in jail, take your truck, your dog and the wife and kids. I would love to hunt in that state in some of the shell mounds that I know about but I would have to be a outlaw at heart(ha ha).

very funny MR...LOL! Guess I better stick to metal detecting on the beach8-)

It feels like artifact hunting and the stuff is even older. If you head a little north of Naples say on the north side of Fort Myers you'll get into an area of the coast where if your metal detecting you have a good chance of finding large numbers of fossil shark teeth at the same time on the beach. Venice Beach is very well known for that.
You'll also be very close to Marco Island... And just for curiosity you might want to look up that archaeological site.
This great state took the site of the largest number of preserved prehistoric wooden artifacts and artwork and turned it into a housing subdivision.
....oooh.. But don't pick up an arrowhead... Or even a 1963 penny.

Sounds like a nice place to hunt.If i found a arrowhead or a 1963 penny .They can keep the penny.I would lay down a dollar in place of the arrowhead.Everybody knows that in the end its all about the buck...

Marco is all houses these days. There is a nice little archeological/historical site on the north side that you can visit and see some of the shell walls and mound remnants. You won't see anything else as it's all overgrown with scrub brush, palms and other tropicals. It is worth a visit.

well I'm headed down that way for a few months thought I would find out what there is to do. Thanks for the shark tooth info, something that I've always wanted to find.

Since you're going to be there for that long I would definitely look into visiting the Peace River or the Venice Beach area

can you just go hunt them or do you need a permit or some kind of permission?? Have you ever metal detected there or are there to many people?

No permit is necessary to hunt and keep fossil shark teeth the only permit is for vertebrate fossils.
Metal detecting is definitely allowed at the Peace River.. At least every section I've been to its 110 miles long.
I'm pretty sure metal detecting is fine at Venice Beach although I'm not positive.

gonna get me a mask, pole basket and a short shovel from wally's world when I get there. Both places sound like a blast Gator. They even have a festival in April. Looking forward to that too. THNX man!!
