Nail in Heart pin

Anyone know the significance of a nail through the heart pin. It doesn't seem to be the design I would think of for a pin.? Could it be mourning jewelry?? ?Any Ideas....Lance

My first impression is that it isn't complete-- maybe just part of something. Maybe the 'nail head' was the support for a gem stone?

I believe that it is complete. It does not appear that a stone was on it anywhere. The little part sticking out just to the left of the head of the nail is part of the pin on the back. There does not seem to be any place where any other part went on it...Lance
