I would like for everyone who has found Game Pieces in their hunts to post their pieces and then tell the games the Indians played. I have some but not many. I think it would be a interesting thread and will be an education on their games as to what was used. I know some have more than others but I feel it will be fun. Thanks, rock

You should start.

Ok here is what I have. The Games was called "Stick Ball". These small round stones have been pecked into shape to be as round as possible. They would take leather and rap it tight over and over and then tie it shut like we do baseballs. They would then make sticks and try to hit the ball while on the ground from one side to the other like hockey. There would be 2 teams playing against each other. I have a couple of others but they are in a frame. I have found these in one area in a field not near water. Hope there is more games to post and tell about.

First one is a small cupped discoidal made of high grade steatite/chlorite. Second one was a high grade steatite/chlorite shard, but all 6 surfaces are ground to create a square that might have been a game piece, not quite sure on that one...

Holy cow Larson those are amazing! Did you find all of those? What is the item in the first pic? Looks like a little surprised face! Are those types of artifacts found in locations where there were permanent settlements?

Here is my game balls, family lore has it they belonged to my grandmothers great grandmother, and they used them to toss at a "target" drawn into an area of packed dirt. How far or how big the target or what kind of target I have no idea. Always imagined it as a cross between darts and shuffleboard?

Larson I think we all want to ramble through your toy box. Those are killer pieces! On a side note, what type of camera do you use? It must be the premo highdef camera. It always causes my iPhone app to crash. I'm not mad, just in the market for a real camera myself. Phone cameras are pretty good, but not a replacement for the real deal!

oh yeah epp
i forgot to answer your second question....yes these artifacts were found in a permanent village settlement that is very old
the mandans were farmers and lived in earth lodges that would have a dozen or more people living in each one........there were over 90 earth lodges on the same site at one time.........
.....the biggest ceremonial lodges could easily hold 50-80 or more people at one time

hey thanks NC..i use canon pwer shot digital cameras some are 11 or so megapixels and some are 16 megapixel
i don't like the 16 megapixel size cuz the images are difficult to load because their sizing needs to be reduced to very small or they won't load into the posts too good

Here's one
