My hunting partner love to hunt for buttons,so we did some research on farms around here and found one place 1 mile from our homes that was an 90 acer apple orchard from around 1830-1945 and from then on animal pasture....it was finally plowed up this month with permission we hunted a very small section at one end of the field 50"100" area.
In approximate 1 hour we found 1 Tombac button and 6 gilded buttons, one is a very small cuff button Diamond pattern, one 1820 large cent,45 caliber musket ball, that smacked some thing very hard.
We also found two pieces of knapped flint...leading us to believe there might have been an Indian village on this property.
Will have mare finds tommrow.
By the way Jim is using a Tesoro Toltec II i`m using the Omega.
sorry no pictures my camera is busted just now !
Gary & Jim
Got back there today couple more hours 4 more large cents two in one hole, 2,1822...1,1827 and one still cookin in peroxide.
Found three more cuff buttons,6 more gilt buttons, and handle of a baby spoon.
Got my camera to work too but it i takes crummy pictures.

I can't understand how so many buttons get dropped. What the heck did people do with them back then?

Those are some nice finds, and from the sound of the site, there should be a lot more waiting for you. Congrats and good luck tomorrow. :icon_thumleft:

Apple picking is done around in mid.to late fall and coat buttons, and carrying the apple boxes, the buttons pull off...probable lots of kids climbing in the trees, helps to loose buttons.
There were 180 apple trees on this 90 acre site.
We hardly touched the place...Yet!

Simple. They wore them everyday. You and I carry change in our pocket everyday, and look at how much of that gets lost. You will say that the buttons were attached, and the change is not, but think about the number of buttons that were discarded with worn out clothes, or pulled off a coat by taking a gun (and shoulder strap) off, or mounting and dismounting a horse...

There are a lot of buttons out there to dig.

Cheers,

Buck

They were sewn on by hand so - they might have only been put on with one thread or two
they had pouches and powder horns and sachels slung across there bodies and when removed - Im sure many came off that way
they wore clothes till it was really worn - many the threads probably just wore thin
some might have been from discarded old clothes that was thrown into their back yard dumps and plowwed under over the years

sounds like a good site

Guys back then wanted an excuse to meet a pretty maid so they plucked a button or two off their shirt or coat and tossed them away, then they went to the young lady they were sweet on and asked them to sew 'em a new button! "Much obliged Mam, may I take to the hoedown saturdey night?

You also have to remember they didn't have garbage pick up every week. When something was worn out it was thrown in the dump or in the fire if it would burn.

Those are some beautiful finds. If I ain't digging coins, buttons are my backup.
