Found this keychain inscribed with the name Joseph in a field in upstate NY over the weekend, and eventually figured out how to press down the tab at the top so that I could pull out the tool that was inside. It's about as thick as a quarter, and has "ANSON PAT. PEND." (patent pending) etched onto it. From web research it looks like Anson used to make a lot of old cufflinks.
The "Anson" piece is designed to sort of ratchet/lock into the "Joseph" piece, so that the bent arm thing has a sort of springing action... when the tab on the Anson piece is pushed down against the springing action, that disengages the jagged teeth from the interior edge of the Joseph piece so that you can pull the Anson piece out. It's hard to even figure out what part of it is supposed to be functional, and what part of the design is just about holding the thing in place when it's locked in the Joseph piece.
Any guesses as to what it is or its age? Thanks!
