British Light Cavalry Pattern 1821 Trooper Sword, made by Hill and Co., Great Britain, c. 1821-1853. Made in London, It would have had a steel scabbard and has no manuafacturer markings. The rectangular hole in photo #2 was used for attaching a lanyard or "Saber Knot" to the saber with the other end of the lanyard attaching to the strong side wrist so that the saber could be released from the strong side hand and hang freely from the wrist for quick recovery while the hand was used to fire a pistol or rifle or to use a pike or other weapon. The saber could then be recovered quickly by using the lanyard thus saving time for the recovery and getting the trooper back into fighting mode with the saber quicker.

Nice find... and nice ID.

Are those e-Bay pics with the little camera icon in the corner?

Thanks Jim and Cypress. Attended many auctions where swords were common place. I remembered seeing one of these and knew it was British and most likely Cavalry. Did a search for that on the internet and came up with it after about 5 minutes. I try hard on other items but you guys are much sharper than I about getting them before I even get close.

Take Care,

Jim Foster
