Hello.
15+ years ago when we moved into our house, there were things left in the basement by the owners son, work out equipment, random holiday decor, and a shoebox full of dirty unpolished stones. Some geodes, some random weird shaped ones, that I might post here as well with help identifying but that'll be another day. But, this one is the most intriguing one, because of what all is showing through, but mostly because it's so heavy, my arm was really tired after scrubbing it gently with a toothbrush.
I tried to google it but I was coming up blank on how to describe it. So I thought it would be easier to post pictures here for all you smarty-pants to try and figure out.

I appreciate the help, in advance. :icon_thumright:

Not a smarty pants but my guess is schorl, just a guess though, streak or hardness test could help, is it magnetic?

It looks like a sample of Lodestone (Magnetite) with Apatite that I have from somewhere out west(Utah I think) that I bought last year, see if a paper clip is attracted to it, try a regular magnet if a paper clip doesn't stick.

It's not magnetite that's for sure then, if you have a piece of unglazed porcelain or even the underneath of the lid of the back of the toilet try a streak test, rub the stone along the unglazed porcelain and see what color the streak it leaves behind, I actually thought of magnetite first as well but then I zoomed in on the black crystal formations and I just guessed schorl, some black schorl is magnetic as well but not all, it could be hematite or geothite, the streak color will help with identifying, if its brown probably it's geothite, if it's a reddish brown its probably hematite, if its white its schorl.

I am the worst, I finally remembered to do this. Used my fiance's phone to take better pictures of the scraping. It barely gave anything, i had to scrap it a few times to get any kind of line/crumble, but it's just black. What is this thing?!
Flash, No flash and zoomed in.

I cant tell if that's a streak or you pressed real hard and that's just little bitty pieces, if it's a streak I'm going with geothite, if its crumbly pieces I'm sticking with schorl.
