Hi -- found this rock with my metal detector while out prospecting along a rocky section of river.

It had a target ID of around 14 on my Minelab Equinox and not magnetic, so appears to be non-ferrous. Also is quite heavy... the piece you see in my hand weighs exactly 5g. As you can see in the picture I chipped a bit off to see what it looked like beneath the crust... while somewhat metallic in appearance it looks quite "grainy" and obviously was brittle enough to snap off a bit using my pick axe.

Just a little curious to know what it could be... any ideas?

Cheers!

To me it looks like some type of lead ore, I'm not saying that is what it is for sure but it does look like it, someone more experienced will set me straight if I'm wrong, Google images of different lead ores online, see what color streak it leaves and maybe do a specific gravity test which are both easy test to do that will help you with identification.

Thanks Steve -- you may well be right. Never come across lead ore before but definitely some similar looking pieces on google images. I'll try and do a specific gravity test and see if that'll help corroborate the theory.
