Hey guys,

At it again this weekend looking for relics in SC. I recovered this heavy, partial pewter button with a diameter of 20mm. The construction is similar to the 3rd regiment of foot button I found last year. There is faint script in the middle...possibly a 3 and a downward pointing V along the edge (part of an 8 point star I suspect). My gut is telling me this is military- any ideas?

Damn pewter buttons are always a neat find.vanzutphen

It looks like it could be a Rev. War military button based on the style it was made and that part of a design.

That was my initial thought, hopefully someone recognizes the design.

Looks like a variant of the Rev War 42nd (Black Watch)

Now that IP has determined the correct alignment, I was able to positively ID the 4 in 42. Think we have an ID, as they were in fact involved in the Siege of Charleston in 1780!

Wow IP, score with a hail mary on that one

Even though there isn't much, it did look like a weak crown, and the design up the side is familiar to me because it's similar on the 42nd, 80th, and 84th, and I have dug them all. :) It was just a matter of seeing if one could be matched, and turned out the 42nd was the one.
