Thanks DC MATT. I too thought if I looked long enough, something would come to me, but, no luck. Here's what the back looks like. I haven't checked for a marking under the crust, thinking it would only cause the front to lose detail.Wow. Tough one. I looked at it for a while and I can't figure out what that lower symbol represents.
Is it supposed to be a globe?
Can we see a pic of the back?
It is a Distinctive Unit Insignia or DUI. I can't find the exact one but I think Infantry due to the blue and white colors. Maybe a unit that fought in WW1 due to the iron cross.
That helped and I think this is it - 23rd Infantry.

Interesting...Thank you Ivan.Is there a reference source that covers all that info? or your personal knowledge? If a source, I'd LOVE to see it. Thanks again. This just keeps gettin' better and better.note the arms were changed a couple times after korea --it had a sword with a yin yang symbol on its top and in 1980 it again changed --with no "top'[ symbol on it and by the look of the type of material ways its made --I say it was a WW2 era pre korea medal -- so the guy was most likely a WW2 vet ..
