I found this piece at an early 1800's farm east of Toronto a couple of weeks ago and felt it was worth the effort to try to find out what it might have been. I started by tumbling it for 72 hours and changed the 'cleaning solution' every 12 hours. After that, I glued the two pieces back together using 'Weld-Bond' glue, I then gave it a light coat of natural Bees Wax. I've found Bees Wax works well to even out the patina/finish and bring out the original detail on coins and other metals that have been in the ground.
After the piece had been 'cleaned' of it's corrosion I was finally able to give it a closer inspection under a loop and discovered, it still has some of its original bronze/gold finish! It also has flowers and vines cast into it!
I still have no idea what this piece might have been. It's been suggested it might have been a door-handle from a wardrobe or a handle from a vanity mirror.
